How To Put Together an Outfit 101

Putting together outfits can be tricky, especially when you're running late after hitting snooze one too many times. To avoid the morning rush, I recommend planning your outfit the night before, or if you're feeling extra organized, even for the whole week ahead. In this post (and in the video above), I’m sharing a few of my favorite tips and tricks that help me stay stylish and put-together every day.

Let’s start with layering. One simple way to elevate your look is by adding turtlenecks under oversized sweaters, t-shirts, or coats. The key is to make sure the outer layer has a high neckline so that only the top of the turtleneck shows. This general layering rule applies to any two pieces: if your outer layer exposes too much of what's underneath, the look can become overly bulky and unflattering.

When styling oversized sweaters, always remember to tuck in the front or fully tuck the sweater to define your waist. A tucked-in sweater helps avoid a shapeless look. Adding a belt can also be a great way to accessorize. Just remember, if you're wearing an oversized sweater, it’s best to pair it with more fitted bottoms. Loose jeans can overwhelm the look, but straight-leg jeans work well if paired with heeled shoes that fit snugly at the ankle.

Now, let’s talk about one of my favorite pieces: the skirt. The one I’m wearing in the video is perfect for creating various looks because it cinches at the waist and flares out. A high-waisted skirt like this pairs beautifully with cropped sweaters, as they sit right on your hips, exposing just a hint of skin. To add a unique touch, play with tights and socks—there are endless patterns, colors, and transparency options to experiment with. Lastly, as I mention in the video, don’t forget to match your metals when accessorizing. If you’re wearing a silver belt, opt for silver jewelry and shoes to keep your look cohesive.
